Jerzy Wròblewski

C'est au beau milieu d'une réunion de notre comité de rédaction que nous avons appris la disparition de Jerzy Wròblewski.

Comme tant d'autres, sans doute, nous étions frappés de stupeur. Comment un travailleur aussi infatigable, comment un homme aussi présent, comment un pèlerin aussi actif de la science du droit pouvait-il disparaître?

Les souvenirs remontaient en foule. Des textes innombrables, dont beaucoup nous avaient appris à penser, des lettres précises et chaleureuses, des conférences claires et stimulantes. Et toujours, en toutes circonstances, l'esprit en éveil. Aucun sujet, aucune personne ne le laissait indifférent. En toutes occasions, il relançait les débats, interpellait les orateurs, éclairait les points obscurs de la discussion. Toujours nous trouvions en Jerzy Wròblewski l'interlocuteur attentif qui, à l'aide d'une distinction, d'une précision ou d'une référence, nous aidait à formuler nos propres hypothèses.

L'heure n'est pas aux éloges académiques. On dira la part décisive qu'a prise Jerzy Wròblewski dans le développement de la science du droit depuis 1950. On évoquera ses titres prestigieux, ainsi que sa production scientifique étonnante.

Aujourd'hui nous voulons seulement rappeler le soutien qu'il a prodigué à l'équipe de Droit et Société. Il était, depuis l'origine, un membre actif de notre comité de rédaction. Il participait à l'aventure du Dictionnaire encyclopédique de théorie et de sociologie du droit, dont il co-dirigeait la section « théorie du droit ».

Nous voulons surtout évoquer l'ami. Quant il montait à la tribune, ses amis (du reste avait-il autre chose que des amis?) disaient : « Jerzy Wròblewski stricto sensu va parler » – surnom amical que lui valait sa rigueur logique, toujours efficace. Aujourd'hui, à mesurer le vide immense qu'il laisse, nous comprenons que c'est un Jerzy Wròblewski latissimo sensu que nous avons perdu.

It is with the deepest sorrow that we have to inform you that Professor Jerzy Wròblewski died suddenly on 31 May 1990 while on a lecture tour in Switzerland.

Our beloved teacher and mentor, he received his PhD from the Jagiellonian University in Krakòw in 1949 whereupon he joined the Faculty of Law of the University of Lòdz, where he founded and was – until his death – head of the Department of the Theory of State and Law. For many years he was also Rector of the University and dean of the School of Law.

Internationally recognized for his expertise in the theory and philosophy of law, he was visiting professor at numerous universities all over the world, was awarded honorary doctorats by several foreign universities, was member and officer of countless Polish and international learned societies, and was on editorial boards of the leading professional journals.

Research and teaching having always been his first commitment he nervertheless found the time to serve on numerous academic and public regional and national committees and policy-making bodies. Most recently he was appointed director of the Polish Academy of Sciences Research Centre in Paris, a job he did not leave to take on. For his academic and public activity he was awarded the highest distinctions and decorations, both Polish and foreign. A man with profound wisdom and highest moral stature, he was deeply respected and admired by all those who knew him. With his untimely death we have suffered a lot that cannot be made good
